What Is Nyhavn?

Nyhavn — pronounced roughly "New-hown" — is a 17th-century waterfront canal in central Copenhagen, lined with colorful townhouses dating back to the 1670s and old wooden sailing ships moored along both banks. It's the most photographed view in Denmark and the starting point for most Copenhagen canal tours.

The canal stretches about 450 meters from Kongens Nytorv down to the open harbor. The south side is sunny and lined with restaurants; the north side is quieter and better preserved. Hans Christian Andersen lived at numbers 20, 67, and 18 at different points in his life.

The experience from a boat looking back at Nyhavn is something else entirely. The row of houses, the old ships, the scale of the canal mouth — it all reads completely differently from the water than from the crowds on the quayside.

Boat Tours From and Through Nyhavn

Shared Canal Tours

Multiple operators run shared boats from Nyhavn and nearby piers — 20–40 passengers, a fixed 1-hour loop, recorded or live commentary. Around DKK 120–160 per person. Good overview, no flexibility.

Private Boat Tours

The entire boat exclusively for your group. Our private tours depart from Christians Brygge 28 — a 10-minute walk from Nyhavn — and pass directly through the Nyhavn harbor mouth. From DKK 2,499 per group of up to 8.

Hop-on Hop-off Boats

Fixed stops through the harbor. More flexible than a fixed tour, but still shared and route-dependent.

Book a Private Nyhavn Boat Tour

Private, guided by a local captain, from DKK 2,499 for your whole group.

What You'll See on a Nyhavn Canal Tour

A typical 1–2 hour private tour departing near Nyhavn covers:

🏚️
Nyhavn Harbor
The iconic row of colorful 17th-century townhouses and old wooden ships — seen from the water.
🏛️
Christiansborg Palace
Denmark's parliament and royal reception palace, best seen from the canal approach.
📚
The Black Diamond
The Royal Library's striking modern extension jutting out over the harbor in black granite.
🎭
Copenhagen Opera House
One of the most expensive buildings in Danish history, on its own island opposite Amalienborg.
Church of Our Saviour
The spiral tower rising above Christianshavn — beautiful from the canal approach.
🏊
Islands Brygge
The harbor bath and local waterfront — where Copenhageners actually swim in summer.
Note on the Little Mermaid: Not on the 1-hour route — requires at least a 3-hour tour. Book the Harbor Extended (3h) or Sea Fortress (4h) if this is a priority.

Private vs. Shared — Which Is Better?

For most groups of 3 or more, a private tour is both better value and a significantly better experience. On a shared tour you're on a large boat with strangers following a fixed route at a fixed pace. On a private tour the boat is yours — your captain adjusts to you, you can ask about anything, bring your own music, have drinks on board.

For solo travelers or couples on a tight budget, shared tours provide good value at DKK 120–160 per person. But for a family of 4 or any group of 4+, the per-person cost of a private tour is equal to or less than shared — with an incomparably better experience.

How to Book

Private tours should always be booked in advance — especially for summer weekends. The best time slots (late afternoon, golden hour) fill up earliest.
